Check my bill now →Why gold bills are so hard to read
A jewellery bill in India isn't just weight × rate. It stacks up making charges (8–25%), wastage (2–15%), GST (3%), and sometimes a "dealer margin" that doesn't have a name — all on top of the actual gold value. Most bills show only the final total, so the customer has no way to tell whether they're paying a fair premium or being quietly overcharged.
Most Indian buyers pay 10–25% more than they should — not because they're careless, but because the math is designed to stay hidden. This free tool exists to unstack that math in 60 seconds.
How to check your gold bill online
Five steps. Sixty seconds. Runs in the browser — nothing to install.
What a real check looks like
Suppose your jeweller quotes ₹3,20,000 for a 22-gram 22K chain, with the total including GST. Today's fair 22K rate is around ₹13,150/g.
Real gold value: 22g × ₹13,150 = ₹2,89,300
You're paying: ₹3,20,000
Extra over gold: ₹30,700 — roughly 10.6%
FAIR PRICE For a plain 22K chain, an 8–15% premium (making + wastage + GST + margin) is normal. 10.6% sits right in the fair band.
The Varadhi Gold checker does this math instantly against today's rate and gives you the verdict + a script to say at the shop if the price is off.
Frequently asked questions
What is a fair making charge percentage on gold in India?
For plain gold jewellery like chains and bangles, 8–15% making charge over the gold value is typical. For necklaces and intricate work, 15–25% is common. Anything above 25% is on the high side and worth negotiating. Stone-set pieces vary because the stone price is separate from making.
How much wastage should I expect on a gold bill?
Wastage is the small amount of gold lost during crafting. For plain jewellery, 2–5% is normal. For intricate designs, 5–12%. Beyond 12% is aggressive — most modern casting has near-zero real wastage, so anything higher is effectively a hidden making charge. Ask the jeweller to justify it.
Is GST already included in the total or added on top?
GST on gold jewellery in India is 3% — 1.5% CGST + 1.5% SGST — applied on the gold value + making charges. Bills vary: some show GST as a separate line, some fold it into the total. The Varadhi Gold checker asks you which method your bill uses so the math stays accurate.
Why is the gold rate different at different jewellers?
The base 22K/24K rate is set by the market and doesn't vary much between shops (within ₹50–100/g on any given day). But the final quoted price differs because of making charges, wastage percentages, and dealer margins layered on top. Two jewellers can quote wildly different totals for the same weight and karat — checking the bill breakdown is the only way to compare fairly.
What if my bill doesn't show a proper breakdown?
You can still check it — enter the total weight, total amount you're paying, and today's gold rate. The Varadhi Gold checker computes the effective premium (what percentage of the total is above the gold value) and tells you whether that premium is fair for your karat and item type. If the shop refuses to show a breakdown, that itself is a warning sign — legitimate jewellers itemize every rupee.
Is the Varadhi Gold bill checker really free?
Yes — completely free, forever, no login required. Your bill numbers are calculated in the browser and never sent to a server or stored. Varadhi Gold makes money from jewellery shops that pay for our shop-management software; the free consumer tools stay free because the more people who know a fair price, the more the honest shops win.
