Why gold jewellery costs more than the sticker rate

The gold rate you see on TV or in the newspaper is the raw material price per gram. But when you walk into a shop, that's just the starting number. The final bill layers on:

Making charges (8–25%), the labour cost of crafting the piece. Wastage (2–15%), the "gold lost" during crafting — often a fiction with modern casting. GST (3%) on top of everything. And sometimes a quiet dealer margin baked into the rate itself.

Most Indian buyers end up paying 25–40% more per gram than the raw gold rate — and don't realise how much of that is negotiable. The Varadhi Gold buy calculator shows you exactly what each layer costs so you know what a fair total looks like before you agree to anything.

How the price is calculated

The Formula
(Weight × Rate)
+ Making Charges (% of gold value)
+ Wastage (% of gold value)
+ 3% GST on the sum
= Total

Every jeweller uses this exact formula. The variables that change between shops are making charge % and wastage % — that's where prices actually diverge. Two shops can quote wildly different totals for the same weight and karat just by adjusting those two numbers.

Fair making charges by item type

Use these as a reference when comparing quotes:

Item Fair Band Red flag above
Chain (plain)8–12%15%
Bangle (plain)10–15%18%
Necklace (regular)15–20%25%
Necklace (intricate)20–30%35%
Ring12–18%22%
Earrings15–25%30%
Coins / Bars0.5–2%3%

Note: Big-brand stores (Tanishq, Kalyan, Malabar, Senco) typically quote at the top of these bands — that's your premium for the brand. Local jewellers usually open in the middle of the band and negotiate down.

How to calculate the real cost

Five steps. One minute. Runs in your phone browser before you buy.

1
Note the weight in grams
Get the weight of the piece — from the display card, the online listing, or a live weighing. Insist on watching the scale in person.
2
Confirm the karat
22K (916 hallmark), 24K (999), 18K (750), 14K (585). Each has a different per-gram rate. 22K is standard for Indian bridal + daily jewellery.
3
Pick the item type
Chain, bangle, necklace, ring, earrings. Each has its own fair-band range for making charges — the calculator picks the right band automatically.
4
See the breakdown
Instant result: gold cost, making, GST, total. Each line shown separately so you know exactly what you're paying for.
5
Compare against the shop's quote
Within 5% of the calculator? Take it. 10%+ higher? Ask for the breakdown — the padding is either in making, wastage, or the base rate.

Real example — 25g necklace

Suppose you're eyeing a 25g 22K necklace and today's 22K rate is ₹13,150/g.

Breakdown at 20% making

Gold cost: 25g × ₹13,150 = ₹3,28,750
Making charge (20%): ₹65,750
Subtotal: ₹3,94,500
GST (3%): ₹11,835
Total: ₹4,06,335

FAIR If the shop quotes ₹4,00,000–4,15,000 range, take it. If they quote ₹4,50,000+, either the making is 30%+ (ask for the breakdown) or they're padding the rate itself.

Frequently asked questions

How is the price of gold jewellery calculated in India?

Total = (weight in grams × today's per-gram rate for the karat) + making charges (% of gold value) + wastage (% of gold value) + 3% GST on the sum. For example, a 20g 22K chain at ₹13,150/g with 12% making = (20 × 13,150) + 12% + 3% GST = ₹3,04,167. The Varadhi Gold buy calculator does this instantly at today's live rate.

What is the gold price today per gram in India for 22K?

Today's 22K rate is set by the Indian bullion market and typically ranges ₹13,000–13,400 per gram (fluctuates daily with international spot + INR/USD forex). Retail shops add making + wastage + GST on top, so the FINAL per-gram cost you pay is usually ₹15,000–18,000/g depending on item type. The calculator separates these so you see both.

Are "zero making charge" offers actually cheaper?

Usually no — "zero making charge" is a marketing move. Shops either mark up the gold rate (charging ₹500–1000/g above market) or bury the cost in inflated wastage. Do the total math: divide the final price by weight. If per-gram cost is above ₹15,500 for 22K on a normal-market day, the "zero making" promise cost you money. The Varadhi Gold calculator reverse-engineers any quote so you can spot this.

How much are making charges on 22K gold jewellery?

Fair bands by item: chains 8–12%, bangles 10–15%, necklaces 15–25%, rings 12–18%, earrings 15–25%. Big brand stores (Tanishq, Kalyan, Malabar) typically quote 15–25% across the board — you pay for the brand. Local jewellers often quote 8–15%. Anything above 25% is negotiable — ask for the breakdown.

Is GST on gold jewellery 3% only?

Yes — GST on gold jewellery is 3% total (1.5% CGST + 1.5% SGST). Applied on the sum of gold value + making charges. There's a separate 0.25% GST on the making charge portion sometimes — negligible. Total effective tax is 3–3.25%.

Can I use this calculator for buying gold coins or bars?

Yes but the numbers differ — gold coins and bars have much lower making charges (0.5–2% typically, sometimes free at banks). Set making to 0–2% for coins and bars. GST on investment-grade gold (999 purity) is still 3%.
